You may have forgotten, but way back when we learned basic arithmetic, the first thing we learned to do was add, then subtract, then multiply, then that terrible thing called division. We would like to talk about second level mathematics, known by the youngsters as take away.
Lets start with your home phone.
If you are average, it costs about $40 per month
Then you add average log distance at about $15 per month.
Now lets eliminate those on the road charges.
This might involve phone booth charges beepers
and perhaps calling cards. For most of us, these
charges rarely exceed $10 monthly.
If you have a PC at home, it is most likely
connected to the Internet at a cost of around
$22 monthly for dial-up service, or $50 for
high speed cable modem or DSL connection
Now Lets learn to subtract. First, we total up our
communications cost for typical home phone service.
we have underlined the applicable numbers for most
of us. As you will note, this comes to a total of
approximately $115 per month. So much for our
lesson in addition. Now we learn our first lesson
for take away as it applies to communications.
We assumed your home phone with long distance would be around $55 per month IF you didnt have features like Caller ID, Voice Mail, or Call Waiting. Maybe you have a beeper to stay in touch when you are away from home. If you do, that would normally add around $10 per month for a total cost of about $65 monthly. Now lets replace that with a Sprint wireless phone and do the math.
Cost of wired phone service with long distance & beeper $65.00 Monthly
Cost of Sprint wireless phone - -49.99 Monthly
You save - $15.01 Monthly
Plus, you get NATIONWIDE numeric paging on the Sprint PCS network, Caller ID, Voice Mail, Caller ID, Call Waiting, NATIONWIDE long distance, 350 daytime minutes (most home users dont use their phones during the day), 3650 night and weekend minutes (this is when most users DO use their phones), plus 2 megabytes of data to provide up to 100 instant messages, 150 Emails, and access for up to 100 web pages on the Internet, PLUS the ability to use your phone anywhere in the USA on the Sprint nationwide network! So why do you still have a wired home phone?
Now, lets turn our attention to the Internet. Some of us spend a lot of time on the Internet. Others use it primarily for Email and chat rooms. Regardless of how we use, the net, there is one think we ALL dislike and that is dial-up access with the long connect time and slow download speeds.
With that thought in mind, we can generally conclude that if we are going to use the Internet, that we either are already using a high speed connection circuit or we are planning to move to a high speed connection when technically and economically practical. On that assumption, we can assume a cost of around $50.00 monthly ($49.99 if you want to get technical).
If you are a traveler, even between home and office, your choices become more complicated. Do you have Internet connection at home, the office, or BOTH? If both, your cost is going to double! Then, what do you do when you travel? Do without or ???
What if you live in a rural area where neither DSL or cable modem service is available. These services are normally available only in metropolitan areas and rarely in rural communities.
